Visceral Osteopathy

Visceral Osteopathy is concerned with treatment of the internal organs and their coverings (known as viscera).  Visceral problems may lead to back or joint pain and equally problems within the musculoskeletal system may also have an impact on the viscera.

Each of your organs are either attached to the spine or to the walls of the body cavities by ligaments.  As you bend, stretch and move your body, your organs move with it.  Thin membranes surrounding the organs assist this movement.  Any adhesions or tensions can alter or restrict this movement, which may lead to stress on the organ. The body often adapts in order to reduce the discomfort of the organ, which can lead to stiffness and pain elsewhere in the body.

A visceral osteopath uses gentle techniques to help release pressure and tension in the tissues and restore the musculoskeletal system in cases where the body is restricting the function of internal organs.
