What to expect...
People are often unsure what to expect when visiting an osteopath for the first time. What happens? What should I wear? Do I need to bring anything? How much does it cost? These are all common questions. Please read the following guidelines before attending your first appointment, so that you have a clear understanding of what to expect.
What happens during your first osteopathic consultation?
On your first visit, your osteopath will take a detailed case history, including a full medical history. Then, depending upon the location of the problem, you will usually receive a full examination of the spine or region of the body where you are experiencing pain.
At the end of the first consultation/examination, your osteopath will provide you with a detailed explanation of the diagnosis and proposed osteopathic treatment. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have about the proposed treatment.
We always carry out some osteopathic treatment on your first visit, but please note that taking a detailed case history and carrying out the examination will take up a large part of your first consultation.
If necessary, or in cases where osteopathy is not the most effective treatment for your condition, we will refer you for further investigations such as; X-ray, MRI, or to a GP, specialist or another appropriate practitioner.
What should I wear when I visit an Osteopath?
During the examination, you may be asked to undress down to your underwear. If you are uncomfortable with this, please wear baggy clothes such as tracksuit bottoms, or a pair of shorts and tee shirt.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Please bring a note of any medication you are taking (or the medications themselves), either prescribed or over the counter, including homeopathic or herbal remedies. This will aid in assessing your condition and in reaching a correct diagnosis.
Can I bring someone with me?
You are welcome to bring a friend or relative with you into the treatment room if it makes you feel more comfortable.
How much does it cost?
The current fees are £42 for your first visit and £40 for subsequent visits.
Each treatment session will normally last for approximately 30 minutes.
If you are insured, you are expected to settle the bill for each visit and you will be given a receipt so that you can reclaim the fee from your insurance company.
Payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card.
If for any reason you decide not to take an arranged appointment, please call as soon as possible to cancel, so that we can give your appointment to someone else.
Depending upon the circumstances - we usually charge for appointments if they are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.
