Acupuncture for Pain Relief
Acupuncture is a proven effective treatment for the relief of pain and we are pleased to offer it as a therapy in addition to our osteopathic treatment.
How does acupuncture work to relieve pain?
Scientifically, acupuncture works on many levels:
- Triggers the release of chemicals in the muscles and brain to relieve pain and influence the body’s internal regulating system, thereby promoting a state known as homeostasis, where all bodily systems strive to work at their optimum.
- Alters the response to pain by modifying pain information pathways in the spinal cord
- Strengthens the body’s resistance to disease
- Increases blood flow to compromised areas
Classically, channels of Qi are said to run in regular patterns throughout the body. Obstructions in this flow create stagnant areas that lead to disease and/or pain.
Needling appropriate acupuncture points unblocks these obstructions, revitalising areas of deficiency and draining areas of excess.
This creates internal harmony - the Chinese way of saying, homeostasis.
